How & where to Sell your clutter
Just because you are getting rid of it doesn't mean someone else won't want it. If you have some items you would like to sell then follow the steps below to ensure a safe, and stress-free experience.
take what you can get
Everyone always assumes that their stuff is worth more than what people are willing to pay for it. Don't take this personally, it's just business. One of the most important things to remember is that getting $5 for something is better than having to pay $10 to get rid of it.
When selling to consignment stores such as Plato's Closet and Play It Again Sports, your total is your total. They will review your items and give you fair consignment value. If you don't like their number go somewhere else.
However when selling your items on your own, it is important to do your research and to be open to barter.
what is it worth
To find out approximately how much your items are worth you need to do some recon. Look around on sites such as VarageSale and Kijiji to see what similar items are listed for. As always, this is only a guideline. Many factors and situations can change what your items are worth to others. Just remember: the lower the price, the faster it'll sell.
selling by consignment
If you are looking for an easy, hassle-free way to sell your stuff - Consignment is definitely the way to go.
Sports equipment and clothing are great items to sell to consignment stores. Simply find the store that sells your items and then bring those items in and they will buy them from you right then and there. No muss, no fuss.
Some consignment stores in your area are:
If selling by consignment is the easiest route to take when selling your stuff then a garage sale is the opposite. Not to scare you away or anything, but it is important to know prior to committing that garage sales are A LOT of work. Be sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you decide to host one of your own.
Selling your items online is the perfect balance between consignment and garage sale. You can set your own prices, without having to spend your whole Saturday outside on your driveway. It's a convenient, flexible and popular option if it is done correctly.
Two of the most popular buy and sell sites are VarageSale and Kijiji. They are both free and require an account. You simply take photos of each of your items, post a small description and a price. Personally, I find VarageSale to be the better of the two as I not only find it easier to use, but there are added security features in place and I am able to easily track my transactions. Unfortunately not everyone is on the VarageSale bandwagon and some people use Kijiji only. Both communities are very large, and you should have no trouble selling your items using only one platform. However, if you are dedicated you could post your items on both sites in the hopes of reaching more people.
Always remember that you are communicating with and selling your items to strangers. It is important to always protect yourself and your home. Never give out more information than you need, and never let a stranger into your home when you're alone.
